The Origins of Spaloo

I often get asked just how the Spaloo company came to be. After all, bringing a toilet seat that is popular overseas to an American market is not only risky, but well… involves a little different line of ”business” than most folks are used to. Let’s face it, some Americans don’t even know what a bidet toilet seat is, let alone how much more sanitary, eco-friendly and effective using one is than toilet paper.

So, yes… I took on a challenge to market a product in America that is not generally socially accepted. But, that’s ok. My job is to educate everyone about the benefits (and there are many) of a Spaloo.

I didn’t set out to be a toilet guy, however. It was on a trip to Japan that I experienced my first toilet bidet seat in my hotel. Often referred to as ”shower toilets”, these units are the norm in Japan, appearing in most homes and public restrooms. I was very intrigued at first. After trying it, I realized that using a bidet toilet seat was much more sanitary, it felt good, and I immediately recognized that there are countless people who would benefit greatly from this product.

Over the next year I contemplated bringing the “shower toilet” to America. Most of my friends and family thought the idea was a little risky, if not completely crazy. But, I did my homework, and Spaloo was born. Choosing the name proved a little difficult at first, however– it took me almost a year. One day while getting a massage, the word “Spa” came to mind. Combining it with the quirky yet classic British term “loo” clicked, and I realized it was the perfect word to capture the essence of our product.

Ten years ago, if someone had told me that I would be selling bidet toilet seats, I would have told them they were crazy. But today, I would have it no other way.

Move Over Mr. Hanky…Meet Sammy S. Roid

Ok, so I have to admit that I had a little fun recently making a well, um… cartoon about hemorrhoids. One hemorrhoid in particular. His name is Sammy. I wanted to communicate that a Spaloo can offer relief to the pain associated with hemorrhoids.

Perhaps I had a little too much fun and got carried away, but, yes….Sammy talks! As a toilet guy who thinks, talks and writes all day about people’s “business”, I feel pretty comfortable with all subjects.

I figured that if South Park can have a talking, singing Holiday poop on their list of characters, well then, I can have a little fun with Sammy.

Last week, I showed you the Clorox “Ode To The Commode” ad that is, well, just that… a commercial dedicated to the toilet (which is, of course, right up my alley).

It turns out that Clorox not only created a cool commercial, but they are also promoting their Flush For A Cause campaign where they are collecting “flushes”. For each person that comes to their Facebook page and flushes their toilet, they will donate $1 to the World Toilet Organization (WTO).

The WTO is a global non-profit organization that is committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide.

Cleaning a Toilet is More Interesting Than Lebron

Anyone who has been flipping through the stations recently in an effort to get away from news stories on Lebron James and his decision to play for Miami (Really? Do we need to hear anymore?!) may have stumbled across a new Clorox commercial: Ode to The Commode.

This ad does a great job of running down all of the common terms and nicknames for a toilet (from “latrine” to “porcelain throne”), while displaying a slideshow of various types of toilets over the years. Some may not think of this as a superb commercial, but to a toilet guy, it’s pretty neat.

A Slight Change to the Declaration of Independence

Happy Independence Day! On this day 234 years ago, the famous Declaration of Independence was approved and adopted by Congress, allowing the thirteen colonies to become separate independent states no longer under control of the British Empire.

I realize this document is more than just important, and I certainly mean it no disrespect by what I’m about to do…

Here at Spaloo, we use the term “independence” a lot. It’s a great word that sums up one of the most important benefits of a Spaloo bidet seat. By using a Spaloo toilet seat, those that may have faced bathroom challenges now have the opportunity for true independence…

Comedian Ron White: Practically A Spaloo Spokesperson!

I was driving the other day listening to my XM comedy station, when a clip from comedian Ron White came on. If you’ve never heard Ron White before, he is hilarious and quite possibly one of my favorite comedians. Ok, well, maybe I’m a little biased…

In his comedy tour and special “Behavioral Problems”, Ron talks about encountering a bidet toilet seat for the first time while staying in a hotel. He may as well be doing an ad for Spaloo! While some of his material may not be considered a suitable approach for me to use in advertising or branding Spaloo, his bit reminds me that people appreciate and respond to the funny side of things.

True, a bidet toilet seat like Spaloo is a product that offers many “serious” benefits such as helping the elderly or those with limited mobility, providing relief to hemorrhoid or constipation sufferers, or assisting those with arthritis or other injuries.

Memorial Day

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. With many people having an extra day off from work, the “unofficial” start of summer is often a long weekend of rest and recreation. With most of the country enjoying warm and sunny weather, camping, boating, fishing, and grilling may have been top on your to-do list.

But let’s not forget the true meaning of Memorial Day. Originally Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day reserved to honor those who have died in the service of our country, and traces back to the days of the Civil War. Chances are that someone in your family, or someone you know, has given their life as a soldier.

When we sit back and think about the true cost of war, it is overwhelming. Every day we take for granted the sacrifices that men and women have made for centuries.

Please, take the time to thank those soldiers and veterans who fight for our freedom, and honor those who have given their lives in doing so.

Today, the internet helps us stay in contact with and provide support to our troops, veterans, or families of soldiers. We live in an age of communication, and for that, we must also be thankful.

There are a number of organizations available at your fingertips, making reaching out easier than ever. Should you wish to write letters to soldiers’ families, send needed supplies, or simply offer messages of thanks, there are organizations and infrastructure in place.

Not long after I started Spaloo, I began supporting Home for Our Troops, and have, from time to time, donated or coordinated events to assist in donating Spaloo bidet seats to disabled veterans.
